Serbia’s underground electronic scene has been flourishing and it has often even been regarded as the new Berlin. Check out these places where you can get to hear both some local talents as well as leading global artists.

Drugstore, Belgrade

Drugstore is DIY cultural venue in Belgrade, set in the space of the  former slaughterhouse, with brutal interiors and intense industrial atmosphere. It all started in 2012 as a crazy unpretentious adventure by a group of like-minded enthusiasts, who wanted to make a place where art and fun will entangle. It was built out of scratch, investing nothing more than great energy and goodwill, which remained the defying logic from the day one.

Since it’s reopening in this new space in 2014, it’s been a melting pot of the city’s sub-cultural life, hosting a great number of names from different corners of the international underground music scene, ranging from contemporary techno acts to indie bands and cutting edge experimental projects – both prominent and obscure. It is also an oasis for local artists and trans-disciplinary art events.

Lovefest, Vrnjacka Banja

The always sunsoaked and spectacular Lovefest is the leading festival in all of Eastern Europe and the 13th edition takes place in Vrnjacka Banja, Serbia from 1 – 3 August 2019. It all goes down in a small, beautiful Serbian town in a lush green park, right by the city’s famous lake. A centre point of the action is always a huge city swimming pool that hosts up to 10,000 people and is a venue for daily parties, while the huge production and extra entertainments, food and bars all make this a wonderful adult playground.

Club 20/44

Everyone refers to Klub 20/44 as “the boat”. The club used to be a strip club and the red velvet curtains and poles inside are left from these times. The club is quite surreal and has a gold statue of John Cleese doing “that walk” on the top deck. “The thing that made it so important was that it was the first club that was completely independent,” says Tijana. “They even had it as a policy: no sponsors, no patrons. They were the first really honest club owners. I just get goosebumps everytime I think about it. I just love to be there, to play there. It’s magic.”
