Clarisse have glided through the tumultuous waters of 2020 with star turns from Sante Sansone, Cele, Ammo Avenue, Lorenzo de Blanck, Simon Kidzoo and chief rocker Mendo, and now enter three figures with Chile’s Pablo Inzunza at the controls. Head of the homegrown Tempura Records label and with Beatport footholds already gathered, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin, Mark Knight, Laurent Garnier, Italoboys and Jamie Jones have already made themselves at home with the life of Pablo. He brings up Clarisse’s century with two tracks paying the utmost attention to the label’s commitment to all things deep and/or funky, two vital ingredients that has served them so well so far.
Bidding to make ‘Tattoo’ a permanent playlist fixture, Inzunza works in subtle references to Kraftwerk and more in-your-face nods to Todd Terry, foraging his way onto dancefloors. As bass bobs with pendulum-geared precision and street corner chatter directs the fl ow, ‘Tattoo’ becomes slightly more darker and sinister than first listens suggest, the tandem of that robotic synth line and guarded bottom end placing the club on tenterhooks as it practices mind and body control.
Next out of the laboratory comes the zippy ‘Elevation’, a chain reaction of radar-scanning synth loops and Dutch house-style squeaks, swapping shifts as they rotate the rhythm. Again dispelling first impressions and developing into something that’s anything but kooky, a vocal sample ensuring you don’t dare stop pushes you like your own personal trainer, though again the bounce is keen to occupy a street corner for its fill of gossip. When bedlam knocks on the door of the club, Inzunza fires straight and true.
