Austin’s techno frontman Barbuto, does it again with a top notch release this time on Sasha Carassi’s “Phobic Recordings”. This galactic EP shows off the brooding dark signature drive Barbuto is known for beginning with “Cicada”. This A side track features huge un-earthly, synth driven progressions complete with square arpeggios and stabs, a pulsing eerie pad and thick rolling baseline. Subtle minimalist percussive elements lace the track making the complete product extra planetary. Cicada gets finished off with a remix by none other than UK powerhouse Spektre. The flip side of the EP “Eye of Horus” serves up a hard hitting circa 99 hard techno feel with a shimmering modern edge in the high end, a progressive synth progression and outright evil rolling baseline. Over-all this package is what we’ve come to expect from this Austin based techno savant.
