Celebrating over a decade in the industry, French DJ and producer Matt Fax has by now firmly established himself as a pillar of the melodic house and progressive scene. With a loyal, global fanbase and half a million monthly listeners on Spotify alone he is now widely considered one of the leading producers responsible for pushing the progressive melodic sound forward.
Set for release in July 2023, his new 15-track album Story Of The Fall traverses a wide range of electronic-subgenres. From club-ready, gritty basslines and cascading synths to melodic, vocal-led cuts, The Story Of The Fall embodies Matt’s 11-year path to the global heavyweight he is today, and lays the foundations for his sound for the future.
Here Matt shares 10 tracks that inspired Story of the Fall with us.
Swedish House Mafia – It Gets Better
It’s one of the tracks that determinate the direction I wanted to take with this album. I wanted something darker and forward-thinking.
Magnificence – Rebel Nation
I’ve been inspired by most of the recent Magnificence stuff for the clubbier tracks of the album, with this track at the top of the list.
Tinlicker – You Take My Hand
Tinlicker have been an inspiration for the past couple of years. I think this track pretty much influenced Beyond Belief even if it’s sounding quite different.
Argy & Goom Gum – Pantheon
This track is my favorite Progressive track at the moment. I’ve inspired myself from this track for the break in The Abyss.
Skrillex, Joker, Sleepnet – Tears
The whole Skrillex album is a masterpiece, but this track really stand out for me, the mix of drill and dubstep is very well executed. I tried to reproduce that in Somber.
Koan Sound – Taken Under
KOAN Sound are very underrated producers. I’ve been listening to them for the past 10 years and they always influenced me in a way or another. I’ve inspired myself from their work to design my growls all over the album.
Queen – You Don’t Fool Me
My dad was a huge fan of Queen, and so I am. I could have choose a billion tracks, but this one was the one I was listening the most during the making of the record. It’s like paying homage to him.
Daft Punk – Motherboard
Daft Punk have been an essential inspiration on this record, especially for Best Days of Our Lives. I tried to reproduce that signature Daft Punk synth sound and I love the result.
Kanye West – Off The Grid
I’ve listened to a lot of Kanye during the making of this record, especially the whole Yesus album and this track from Donda.
Ziak – Dans les règles
I’ve discovered Ziak around 2021, he’s a French rapper/driller. His universe inspired me towards the end of the album making, especially this track on « Somber » and some other parts of the record.
