Malóne co-founded the Hurry Up Slowly label alongside Calussa and they have previously taken their fresh low slung house sounds to labels like ABRACADABRA Records. Now the pair land on Get Physical Music with a new version of Dennis Ferrer’s ‘Sinfonia Della Notte’, we caught up with Malóne to discuss the release, the scene in Miami and more.

Hey Malóne, welcome to Music is 4 Lovers! How is 2023 treating you so far?

2023 has been amazing so far. Probably the best start to any year that I’ve ever had. Just finished my first spring headlining tour, “Don’t Look Back”, and it was an incredible experience. Being able to play in so many new markets for the first time and connect with so many different people at all the shows. Played some massive shows, some intimate ones that I’ll never forget. Have had a couple releases, and are now gearing up for a massive summer Europe tour that I can’t wait to announce.

Growing up in Miami must have been a fantastic experience. Tell us a bit about that and how you got into the music scene.

Yea Miami is definitely a very special place… My uncle was a DJ in the 80/90s and he taught me how to DJ when I was like 10 years old. Have always been into music and had a background in music growing up. My family was very influential for me. When I stopped my baseball career, coincidentally it was the same time that the EDM boom was happening, and all my friends were super into it. I bought a Traktor controller and started djing at my friends’ parties just hanging out during the summer, one thing led to the other.. I started learning how to make music around 2015/2016 and was always going out to parties or to see my good friend, mentor & miami dj legend Edgar V at all his shows. I’ve always been a fan and a student of the house music scene, that’s what makes this journey so special to me.

Your latest release sees you debut on Get Physical Music alongside Calussa, congratulations! What is your relationship with the label and what makes it a good home for your sound?

I have always been a fan of Get Physical and all of the music that they put out. Just pure good house music, regardless of the sub genre that it may fall into. That’s honestly why we thought of sending them Sinfonia. Very happy that they appreciated our interpretation of Dennis Ferrer’s classic. It’s definitely a perfect home for a worldly sound.

The initial inspiration for the release came from Dennis Ferrer’s iconic track ‘Sinfonia Della Notte’. What does your new take offer? Did you have a vision from the outset?

I think the most important thing was first being able to connect with Dennis on a personal level on tour. He is one of the OG’s of this industry and such a humble amazing person. Having his blessing was the first step. More importantly than anything we wanted to make sure that our sound, our vibe was being represented in this new version. Some afro, some grooves & drums, a good energy that you just feel like when you hear any other good proper house music track.

How do you work together with Calussa as a duo in the studio? Do you have a set practice or just go with the flow?

We love to bounce ideas off each other but mostly always on the same page and trust each other which is super important. We already have a lot of experience and time together working on music over the last couple of years so for us it’s all about going with the flow and it’s always a very solid and supportive give & take.

Are there any exciting young producers or DJs on your radar at the moment?

That’s my favourite thing about the industry, is that there’s always so much talent and new artists coming into the scene with some fresh music and vibes. I definitely think Miami has some of the best up & coming talent at the moment. ODK, Riveron, Bryan Softwell are some of my favorite young artists.

Away from the studio and DJ booth, what are your personal passions and interests?

My family… One of the most important things to me is being the best husband, soon to be father for the first time, son & brother I can be. My family has always been so supportive of me and my dream to follow his crazy music/dj career. So I owe a lot to them. They are my biggest inspiration.

It’s been a pleasure having you with us today! Lastly, do you have any advice for aspiring producers and musicians looking to make a name for themselves in the industry?

BE YOURSELF! Find out who ever or whatever that is and stick to it. Surround yourself with good people, a strong team.. Be consistent! And the most important…

Don’t ever give up on your dreams if you truly want them.
