“BUTTERFLY DOORS” arrives via All But 6 – home to Pouya, Fat Nick, Kxllswxtch, Mikey the Magician, Shakewell, and more. It’s also the final taste of his forthcoming album PALOMA, a project where lush, insightful alt-pop meets blossoms out of the South Florida rap scene. Here, sounds like indie, pop, and R&B all coexist in Lu’s boundaryless world as he makes a mission statement for a fresh alternative sound.
Lu explains, “The song ‘Butterfly Doors’ was inspired by a memorable Uber ride Mikey The Magician and I took on our last tour. Our driver, Edward, an older gentleman dressed like a proper scholar, owned a badass Tesla with butterfly doors. We engaged in an amusing conversation about stocks, even though I had no idea what Edward and MTM were talking about. I always thought it was funny that we were balls-deep in a conversation about stocks before our show.”
He adds, “The first verse reflects on my journey to break into the music industry, comparing the effort to open doors both figuratively and literally. The song’s atmosphere embodies a feeling of disconnection and eagerness to leave a crowded show. Later, I leave with a girl but struggle with commitment in the relationship, as explained in the third verse. The bridge adds a contrasting perspective, expressing a desire for carefree moments in the backseat, driving endlessly in the Tesla without worrying about stopping for gas.”
He concludes, “‘Butterfly Doors’ draws inspiration from various aspects of life, including personal growth, ego, my interaction with Edward the Uber driver, and the complexities of relationships with females, friends, and fans. The song’s meaning remains open-ended, allowing listeners to interpret it in their own way.”
Born & raised in Miami, musician Lucas Perez, or Lu for short, has always been inventive. Throughout his life, Lu pursued countless creative endeavors, but music was always a constant. Influenced by artists ranging from Lil Wayne to Odd Future & Childish Gambino, Lu has never boxed himself into a singular sound.
He’s mastered a versatile array of complex styles, but it’s his distinctly infectious personality that keeps fans coming back. It feels like he’s much more than a musician. His narratives are relatable & genuine, his charm is undeniable, and who he is as a person surpasses his music on its own. With that approach, he caught the attention of Florida legend Pouya, leading to his relationship with All But 6 Records, nationwide tours, unforgettable collaborations, and millions of streams in the process.
