Interview with Viktor Talking Machine

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What is the most challenging part of becoming a full-time producer and touring artist?
It started with the global wave of electronic music in the 90s. We discovered underground parties at old disused airports and old factories. But after a while we didn’t wanted to be just visitors, so we decided to organize our own parties and to play music we like. That was our way into the electronic music and our first contribution to the scene. The biggest challenge for us is to find a good balance between producing music, playing DJ-gigs and spending time with family and friends. Mostly you can just focus on one part, but it is important to take care of all of them.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
It would be great to have such positive turning point, but we think we have a lot of small curves, which lead us in the end to a life full of electronic music. Those small curves are for example our first releases, or wonderful nights with great energy, where we met booker, promoter and other fantastic artists. At the moment we have wonderful people around us, so we look in a bright future.

Where is your home base? If someone were visiting there for the first time, what clubs and/or parties and/or restaurants would they want to check out?
Our homebase is Halle. A small beautiful town in the middle of Germany. If you would visit us, we will start with our own small Open Air. Halle has a special law, which allows you to organize spontaneous parties on many places around and in the city. After all the dancing and drinking, we become very hungry, so we will check out the best Burger in town, which is called Tischmanns Nr. 1. To get prepared for the party, we stop by the Czech. A nice bar with really cool stuff and awesome drinks. And later at night we will start raving with the Station Endlos guys or visit the legendary Charles Bronson Club. When the sunshine starts to kiss our sweaty heads it is time to bring you to the airport, which is just 25 minutes away. We give you a big hug, some sticker and hope that you will come back. All in all it was a wonderful day and night.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
We always would say … do it. In the end it is that easy. It is always hard work and it will take a lot of energy and time. But if you really want to become a producer, you will achieve it someday. It is important to find your way and don’t copy others. Try to listen to as much music as possible and analyze it. Find people around you and jam with them. And don’t forget to be patient.

What’s on the horizon for Viktor Talking Machine in 2017?
Hopefully all of them. We will definitely release more music on labels we like. We have two more remixes finished and wait for some EPs to sign the last contracts. We look forward to all our gigs, but don’t want to judge them beforehand. Besides the music, we will move to a new flat, take care of our dog and handle the family life.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
We grew up in small villages, so we get used to nature and really need it. So we like being outside – cycling, snowboarding, playing football and sometimes mountain boarding. We like taking analog pictures and are big football supporters. On the other hand we are PC freaks and play online games and watch some streams. Maybe these are no hobbies, more another source of inspiration.

What are some touristy things you do while playing in a foreign city?
We love good food, so we mostly check out good restaurants and local food markets. It is always great to meet the promoters and have a nice dinner together in preparation of the night. And if we have time, we check out some art museums or meet some friends. But the most touristic thing is hanging out at airports or train stations.

Dream gig …
Would be all night long at Panorama Bar.

Name one of your go-to tracks …
Rocketnumbernine – Matthew And Toby (Four Ret Remix)

This tune is so sick.

Tell us about your mix…
This mix is very special for us, because we really like the work of Music is 4 lovers, so we instantly said yes to the podcast request. We spend one weekend together and discussed which records we include. After a hard fight we started to record the set and it felt perfect. We had some friends around us and it was like a small party. The original set had seven hours, but we choose this part, because we think it is the most exciting. Hopefully the tracks will reach the listener as they reached us, so that everybody has a great time with the music.

Drink of choice …
Ordinary water with a small piece of lemon peal.

CHEERS!
