Lovecast 293 soars to his smoothly from the one and only Mihai Popoviciu.
Mihai Popoviciu just delivered his third album and 6th release of his already long career via Poker Flat Recordings. The unassuming producer and DJ from Cluj, Romania (where he still lives), has earned plaudits from fellow producers and dancers alike, releasing on the likes of Highgrade, Desseous, Bedrock and his own label, Cyclic.
Interview With Mihai Popoviciu
1.) First off, can you give us a quick little background on yourself and what got you into music?
As a kid of the mid 90’s I got attracted by the cheesy rave sound of that time. Few years later I discovered the cult of electronic music and fell in love with it completely. I started to produce music in 2001 and in 2005 I had my first vinyl out on the infamous german label Gigolo Records. That I consider to be the start of my career as a producer and DJ.
2.) You’re about to release your latest album Motion Manifest… what can you tell us about it?
Motion Manifold is my third album, one for the dancefloor that gives off a sense of completeness with its distinctive texture and vibe. It is groovy, deep and hypnotic like most of my work.
3.) Tell us a little about your relationship with Poker Flat… was it a no-brainer to release your new album with them?
This album is the natural step forward towards my long time connection with Poker Flat. I have released with them five EPs in the past since 2013 and I was very happy when label head Steve Bug came with the idea of me doing an album on Poker Flat.
4.) Who would you say you’ve drawn inspiration from in finding your sound?
I couldn’t credit a particular person for my inspiration. I have been listening to a lot of music from different genres and I think that my sound is like a puzzle with pieces from everything that appeals to me.
5.) What have you been doing to keep busy during the quarantine time?
To be honest this time off during quarantine did not bother me so much. I kept busy moving to a new apartment, and produced a lot of music. Also my wife gave birth in July so the timing was perfect for me to be around when it happened.
6.) Tell us about the mix you’ve put together for us… any tracks in particular you’d like to highlights?
Most of the tracks from this mix are mine from the upcoming album plus a couple of remixes. Many say about my music that it is instantly recognisable and I like to believe that this is a good thing.
Turn it up & enjoy!
