Interview with Mihalis Safras

How did you first get introduced to underground dance music? What is the most challenging part of becoming a full-time producer and touring artist?
I started producing almost two decades ago. Back then was when I met one of my dear friends Mark Broom and together we started Material label. As a vinyl lover I’ve always had the dream of having my own label –18 years later and still feeling the same love. For me there is only a satisfying challenge when you love what you do motivates you and give you happiness.

What has been the most exciting turning point of your career so far?
The days I am living now are the most exciting ones. I’m working together and collaborating with the living legend that is Green Velvet, and have already had three singles released this year (Pez is the latest one) and many more to follow. Blessed!

Where is your home base? If someone were visiting there for the first time, what clubs and/or parties and/or restaurants would they want to check out?
I’m Greek born and raised but travelling so often I feel my home base is the airport (there some great restaurants at airports J). Sadly no clubs at terminals but hey… that’s an idea.

What advice would you give to an aspiring producer?
Stay focused, don’t listen to anyone and never give up! Soon people will notice and the journey will start!

What’s on the horizon for you in 2018?
We’re halfway through and today I had the 4th track that entered top10 charts on Beatport. That makes me excited to show what I have coming next: new collabs with Roger Sanchez, Yousef and of course Green Velvet, plus a few remixes for Claptone and S-Man. This has already been a massive year for me so really looking forward to the next few months.

Do you have any hobbies outside of music?
Wouldn’t say it’s a hobbie but I like reading the Bible. Try it.

What are some touristy things you do while playing in a foreign city?
The problem is that when I’m off for an event I don’t have enough time to relax and go sightseeing. Mostly I focus on food (as I love being a ‘fatboy’) and hotels. But definitely I can say that in Lost Beach Montanita I enjoyed surfing.

Dream gig…
Honestly I don’t have a dream gig in my head. Closing Sankeys last year was dreamy though.

Name one of your go-to tracks…
My latest remix for Claptone ‘Stay the Night’, which is out in few months.

Tell us about your mix…
It’s mostly my own unreleased stuff so you know what to expect the next months. Hope you enjoy and if you listen in car don’t dance and drive J.

CHEERS!
