Hey PRØVOST how are you? Welcome to Music Is 4 Lovers. How has the last year been for you?

The last year has been rather busy to say the least.  Been working on getting several amazing releases prepared for Techno Brooklyn Records, along with organizing events and working on a few personal projects of mine.

Are you back to playing gigs now? How does it feel?

I’m fully back to playing gigs again and it feels surreal.  It almost feels like I’m back to playing gigs for the first time again.  The excitement, the energy, the vibe, and the feeling of euphoria in the air here in Brooklyn just makes everything feel right again.  It’s been a rough year trying to do events in NJ, but now that we’re back to where we do things best just makes the nightlife here that much greater in the recent weeks.

What did you learn during the pandemic year, what did you miss most?

Have patience and to stick to your craft.  Never give up what you love the most and always have hope because things will ultimately get better no matter what you are dealing with.  There will be ups and downs but as long as you keep your head high, there will always be light at the end of the tunnel. That said, I definitely missed the people the most.  Seeing the smiling faces and energy from the people that made this scene real.

Tell us how you juggle running parties, running your own label and Djing / producing?

Oh man it’s been one hell of a ride. It’s definitely all extremely time consuming, but I’ve taught myself to keep to a schedule.  During the week at night I usually find a few hours to myself. This is where I find myself in the studio working on the next tune.  As long as I’m able to get in a few hours of production in per night, I’m happy.  As for running the label, it’s really been coming together over the course of the past year.  I have a full schedule of releases lined up for the remainder of the year from a couple AMAZING artists.  I’m so excited to be releasing music from so much talent, and on my own imprint nonetheless – it truly is a blessing.

Which of these things came first for you?

I started production first back in early 2014.  I’ve always dabbled with it in my early 20s, but finally found the courage to take the next step forward after I started releasing my music and getting signed to labels.  DJing came next, which was actually a really difficult thing back when I started, especially in the Brooklyn area.  The competition was getting greater and greater, and more and more artists were popping up, so you can say that things became harder than initially expected.  After starting Techno Brooklyn with my business partner, Austin, I’ve come to realize that you really need to possess the entire package in order to level up.  It’s a wild industry out there with a TON of talent – becoming a standout with your hand in every basket is rather mandatory nowadays.

Where does the impulse to create something come from for you? What role do sources of inspiration like dreams, other forms of art, personal relationships, politics etc play?

The impulse for creating something comes from tunes that I hear or play out at a gigs.  Playing a specific tune at a specific point in the night and seeing the crowds reactions is one of the most important sources of inspiration I use upon creating my next idea.

For you to get started, do there need to be concrete ideas – or what some have called a ‘visualisation’ of the finished work?

Absolutely not.  Some of my best ideas have come from nothing.  For me, some of the better ideas I’ve come up with generally happen within the first 20-30 mins of beginning work on a blank slate.  As soon as those initial ideas are in place, then comes sequencing, which plays a pivotal part in the creative process.  This, to me, can make or break a track.  Taking your time with sequencing and making sure every element is where it needs to be is super important.

What inspired the new release Dream Interpretation?

I was actually in the middle of a trip to Puerto Rico during the creation of this EP, which is where the B-side of this release got its name – ‘El Yunque’. The 2 tracks were only simple elements during that time, but the second I got home to my studio, I found the courage to finish them.  Pretty crazy what a little time away from the studio can do to your creative process!

Are you making tunes to play in your own sets, with certain clubs and situations in mind?

I’m always working on new tunes to play in my sets with certain situations in mind.  Depending on the vibe of the night (or day) – this usually influences my choice of music from start to finish.  I like to take my fans on a journey with my music, so I like to start off a little softer with an atmospheric and deeper feel.  Depending on how energetic the crowd is that night, I’ll up the pace during halfway to end of my set, sprinkling my own productions throughout.  Especially during key moments of the night.

What’s next, what else you working on?

I have a one more single for the year coming up on Tragedie, which is run by the Teenage Mutants.  In the interim I will be finishing up a few tunes I’ve been working on and getting them ready to release in 2022.  Super excited to share what I’ve been working on!
