Celebrating five years of So Glad Records with their new 12” featuring a heavy jazz influenced two tracker of Scharbatke on the A and Turquoise Colored French Tourists on the B with a fantastic Bias remix of Love is Only Moments Away.
We got the privilege of syncing up with the boss-men of So Glad Records to hear more about this amazing 5-year journey and what we can expect next from the imprint.
Interview With So Glad Records
1.) Who is So Glad Records? (Please tell us a little about yourself and your background)
So Glad Records is based on a crazy idea of some friends to start a label to finally get their music on vinyl. Of course, without knowing anything from the business. The first 300 copies of our first release were delivered back then to our little studio and we had no plan what to do…Luckily a couple of crazy record sellers believed in our release. After a short time, we were sold out… Until today we only release music from ourselves, we have no contracts and no plan what to do next!
2.) Tell us about your newest release.
We are celebrating five years of So Glad Records with this 12” featuring a heavy jazz influenced two-tracker of Scharbatke on the A and Turquoise Colored French Tourists on the B with a fantastic Bias remix of Love is Only Moments Away. And Yep we put the Original mit harter Kick on it too – this was the main track of our first release ever “Love is only Moments Away” (SGLD001) from 2015.
3.) Who are your greatest influences?
CHIC / Nile Rodgers – Everybody Dance
We do love Disco and I mean – who not?
J-Dilla– Won’t do
J-Dilla changed our lives for sure – the way he treated the MPC to create his unique drum patterns is still unbelievable and pure inspiration until today!
Daft Punk – Revolution 909
Daft Punk – what more can we say. This is the most perfect package. The music, the style, the artwork, the videos – everything. Especially their incredible homework album inspired us a lot.
For sure we love Cassius and all the other ones from the french touch period as well!
4.) Please tell us about the electronic scene in your City. What artists do you love past and present that have inspired and encouraged you and what parties that you love going to have helped your musical evolution.
Quite tough question because all of us went to different parties in different locations back then. In Duisburg (part of the so called Ruhrgebiet) where we all are from originally, there was not really a scene, but we had a nice jazz club (djaezz) and probably one of the coolest bars in the world (Goldengrün) – this was the place where we all met for the first time. This was a crazy place, everyday a DJ played behind the bar (I mean real DJs mixing vinyl next to the barkeeper mixing old fashions) If we were suffering to see the bigger names, we had to go to other places like
Hotel Shanghai in Essen where we saw Moodyman or Mike Huckaby. If we wanted to see some real weird stuff we went to Salon des Amateurs in Düsseldorf. Later on Golden Pudel in Hamburg and Farbfernseher in Berlin were the places to go.
All those little clubs putting a lot of love and enthusiasm into their booking are still our favorites.
5.) How have you been keeping busy during lockdown?
Some of us produced a lot of new music, some took care over their child because kindergarden was closed for a long time. Both was quite inspiring!
6.) What else can we expect from So Glad over the next year?
Since we released maximum one release each year (2015-2020) We guess – one new 12”
