Though she has only been DJing for 4 years, Ely López’s love for electronic music started when she was a 17 year old club-goer — a true shining star out of Panama City, Panama. In her short time behind the decks she has had opportunities opening and closing for some of the industry’s largest names, such as Carlo Lio, Richie Hawtin, Blondish and Nicole Moudaber. Ely has been traveling in and outside of her city spreading her wide range sophisticated but dark style of music. We’re excited to have her featured as this week’s Hometown Hero.

Interview with Ely Lopez
How did you get into the world of Electronic Music? Is there a specific moment of inspiration you can remember?
I listen to electronic music since I am 17 years old. I learned how to mix when I was 19, but it wasn’t until 4 years ago that I decided to go from being a clubber, dancing on the dancefloor to become the one that makes people dance: to be a DJ.
One of the best experiences I could tell you about was when they told me one night, out of the sudden, “Go out there and play the closing set after Sasha.” It wasn’t easy at all because he is a legend, I wasn’t prepared. To continue the musical “ride” is difficult, you can’t lower people’s energy, among other things, but the result was incredible, one of the most amazing nights of my life (goosebumps!)
Tell us about the scene out in Panama City? How is it unique and what set’s it apart?
Panama is a very small country, where people from all nationalities mix together. We are Latinos that enjoy the sound of parties- we love timblales (drums) and conga sounds. This influence of sounds can be felt in the audience when you go to a party. We are constantly learning and growing, we have a lot left to do as Dj’s when it comes to educating the ear, but our little audience are truly electronic music lovers, they live it every day and are constantly learning about new genres and big names in the Industry.
Who are some of your biggest influences?
I have had the opportunity to do the opening for my favorite Dj’s such as Richie Hawtin, Danny Tenaglia, Marco Carola, Apollonia. I also like Miss Kittin, Ellen Allien and Black Madonna.
Any projects or plans on your horizon that we should keep an look out on?
Between my plans is to continue with my production projects. Becoming a producer is the next phase of every dj who doesn’t want to be only playing other dj’s records but also their own.

What is your dream gig?
I think my dream party would be to play for ENTER or Amnesia in Ibiza playing in front of 10 thousand people , it would be incredibly exciting. But, you know, playing for a small crowd and seeing them leave more excited than you are and telling you how amazing was your music, that is also ideal for me.
Tell us about your mix…
This mix is sort of a change from my usual musical genres, I normally play between Deep Techno and Minimal Techno. I want to start mixing fresher sounds in House music without losing the underground and the Groove that is very characteristic of me: music that WILL make you dance!
Drink of choice…
I Love Gin and Tonic ❤
CHEERS!
