Rising from a year of acclaim, exciting duo Frigid Armadillo usher in 2023 with their latest EP Penga via BFM Records.

Self-described ‘pioneers of uncharted house music terrain’, 31-year-old Lebo Lechela and Siyabulela Buhlungu of Frigid Armadillo have been making waves with impressive fusions of tech and mainstream house since meeting at the University of Johannesburg. A decade of friendship later, the South African duo have channelled an unwavering passion for music production into relentlessly creative creations supported by the likes of Chris Lake, Black Coffee, Sun-El Musician, Prince Kaybee, Roger Goode, Sam Divine, David Montoya, and many more.

Since enthralling Aluku Records in 2019, a label whose sole focus is to uplift African artists internationally, the Johannesburg-based duo has developed a wholesome and home-grown sound. Successes such as single Roam In A Day off their debut EP Adam’s Calendar received DJ support from the likes of LP Giobbi, Sam Divine, and Black Coffee via his BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, and was included on Defected Festival’s official 2021 Afro House Mix. Their Goliath’s Footprint EP landed the no.1 spot on the Itunes Dance chart in South Africa while their recent Humanity EP landed the Apple Music no.1 spots in Botswana and Canada and no.2 in the U.S.

The duo are championed by Bridges For Music, a non-profit organisation based in Cape Town that uses the power of music to provide mental health support for young creatives who have encountered traumatic situations at home and in their communities. Providing creative entrepreneurship and well-being programs in addition to opportunities at a world-class recording studio, the program seeks to uplift those from under-served communities. Their recently launched BFM label aims to expand on this mentality by bringing the sounds of Africa to the rest of the world whilst providing a platform for cross-cultural collaboration.

Reaching over 1M Spotify streams and 1M Tik Tok plays in just under 3 years, Frigid Armadillo are firmly cementing themselves as ones to watch. The duo now embark on a new era with their latest EP Penga, channelling honeyed Amapiano grooves in the warmly vibrant single Penga feat. Njivinator and precise and appealing crossover layers in the deftly slinky Ladies And Gentlemen. A silky smooth project that exudes warmth and poise, Penga is a desperately needed taste of summer in the midst of a relentless winter.
